Protect Utility Ratepayers!

Utility ratepayers across the United States deserve more transparency and accountability on how our money is being spent to ensure customers – not shareholders – are benefiting. 

Today, utilities hold nearly all the cards. They can ask for rate increases under the guise of better service, all while threatening service shut-offs or grid challenges if they don’t get their way.

Worst of all, utilities can use our money that’s supposed to go to reliable utility services to lobby for policies that benefit shareholders and hurt ratepayers. Utilities should not be allowed to use our money to fight for rate increases and larger profit margins, and against policies that would improve service and expand clean energy choices.

Customers like me deserve justice, equity, and fairness when it comes to basic needs like natural gas and electricity service. As such, I call on my regulators and elected officials to take action to support:

• Closing loopholes and removing corporate gain costs from customer bills
• Requiring utilities to prove expenses are in the best interest of the ratepayer
• Reducing barriers to competition in the electric grid and clean energy innovations
• Providing regulators with clear guidelines and authority on enforcement and accountability

On behalf of captive ratepayers throughout the country, now is the time to inject more transparency, accountability and fairness into the utility regulatory process.  I deserve affordable and reliable electric service.
